Obama Change Checklist

Obama Positioned to Quickly Reverse Bush Actions

Stem cell, climate rules among targets of President-Elect’s team.

Transition advisers to President-elect Barack Obama have compiled a list of about 200 Bush administration actions and executive orders that could be swiftly undone to reverse White House policies on climate change, stem cell research, reproductive rights and other issues, according to congressional Democrats, campaign aides and experts working with the transition team.

Kellia’s World will keep track of the reversals on this page.

1. On his first full day in office, Pres. Obama started the process of closing Guantanamo. This included calling for suspensions of all proceedings under the Military Commissions Act for 120 days. Judges quickly complied.

He also instituted tougher ethics standards for his staff then the previous administration and froze the salaries of staffers making more than 100K.

2. President Obama has reversed the Mexico City Policy (i.e. gag rule) against funds for international family planning organizations that counsel about or make referrals for  abortions.

He has also ordered that Freedom of Information Act requests be honored. After 9/11, then AG John Ashcroft told all agencies of the Fed gov’t that DoJ would stand by refusals to honor FOIA requests. FOIA does have certain exemptions, but Ashcroft went beyond that.

3. President Obama has signed the Lilly Ledbetter Act that reverses the 2007 Supreme Court decision holding that a victim of wage discrimination must file a complaint within 180 days of the first act of discrimination. Now each discriminatory paycheck is a new act of discrimination that renews the statute of limitations.

4. Truth in Budgeting. President Obama’s first budget has a huge deficit. But part of that is because he has put the costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan into the budget for the first time ever.

5. Ending harrassment of medical marijuana dispensaries. AG Eric Holder has announced that, as a matter of proper allocation of scarce law enforcement resources, the Feds will no longer raid medical marijuana dispensaries operating in accordance with state laws like California’s Prop 215.

6. LGBTI Rights. On March 18th, U.S. President Barack Obama signed the United Nations General Assembly Statement calling for the protection and decriminalization of sexual minorities, “LGBTIs” (lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgendered and intersexed). Bush declined to do so at the December 2008 UN meeting when 66 UN member states signed on.
