Why We’re Here

Hello Again!

Posted by kelliasworld on July 10, 2009

July 9, 2009

Yeah, I know…I’ve been away. Besides another bout of burnout from seeing so many important issues and not being able to deal with them all, I have had a few major changes in my personal life.

I am doing well health wise — not so great financially — but I am still stuck for the optimum blog set up. WordPress allows me to upload sound without putting limits on the size of each item. This is good because I have numerous radio pieces I would like to have all in one place. However, the audio has to be appended to a post rather than stacked in an .mp3 player. Ning let’s me stack my pieces in a player but limits each piece to 20 MB, which is a pain because I have to compress the hell out of my longer pieces and still I would have to break them up into parts, which is time consuming for me and also extra work for my listeners.

Do any of you have an idea as to where 1) I can stack audio in a single player so that my archives are easy to find 2) there is no limit size on individual pieces as opposed to a general limit on total MB’s of audio that can be uploaded to the site, 3) I can arrange them in whatever order I wawnt and ever change order and 4) is free?

Meanwhile, I will try to be better about updating this blog more frequently. I will generally use the following format: A news item followed by my reaction to it as I was doing toward the end. My longer format writing will go elsewhere.

My latest big piece of writing can be found at radiokellia.newsvine.com The topic is the real reason we don’t have single-payer, universal health care. I will announce topics on twitter, so watch for the twitter updates to this page. Left sidebar). US-CERT Cyber Security Alert SA09-088A — Conficker Worm Targets Microsoft Windows Systems

Posted by kelliasworld on March 30, 2009

National Cyber Alert System

Cyber Security Alert SA09-088A

Conficker Worm Targets Microsoft Windows Systems

Original release date: March 29, 2009
Last revised: —
Source: US-CERT

Systems Affected

* Microsoft Windows

Overview

US-CERT is aware of public reports indicating a widespread
infection of the Conficker worm, which can infect a Microsoft
Windows system from a thumb drive, a network share, or directly
across a network if the host is not patched with MS08-067.

Solution

Install updates

The updates to address these vulnerabilities are available on the
Microsoft Update site. We recommend enabling Automatic Updates.

Description

The presence of a Conficker infection may be detected if a user is
unable to surf to the following websites:

* http://www.symantec.com/norton/theme.jsp?themeid=conficker_worm&inid=us_ghp_link_conficker_worm
* http://www.mcafee.com

If a user is unable to reach either of these websites, a Conficker
infection may be indicated (the most current variant of Conficker
interferes with queries for these sites, preventing a user from
visiting them). If a Conficker infection is suspected, the user
should run the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool
and install updates available from the Microsoft Update site.

My World and Welcome to It!

Posted by kelliasworld on October 25, 2008

Hello. My name is Kellia Ramares. I’m a freelance journalist in Oakland, California. I have started this “No Pitch” journalism blog because I have grown very frustrated with business as usual for freelancers. We are advised not to waste time trying to sell what we write; rather, we should find out what sells and then write that. Pitching is basically asking permission to do what should come naturally to a writer (or radio producer, or videographer, etc.) And you get the permission only if you are willing to do it THEIR way. Their choice of people to interview, their angles, their time or space limits, their aesthetics. You end up doing for them what they don’t have the time or skill to do for themselves – and frankly their money isn’t that hot. I hate it!

A huge mistake, maybe a deliberate one in the capitalist system, is to recognize as work only that which is paid. Journalism is hard work. I’ve passed up stories I wanted to cover, or issues that I’ve wanted to comment on, because I didn’t see the money in it. Although I don’t consider myself very materialistic, I do have bills to pay. But I have found myself both poor and frustrated doing just the things that sell. On the other hand, I’ve also burnt out working hard on things that earned praise, but little or no money because there was only so far I could go doing the hard work of journalism for no pay and also having to scrape up paying work. If I were independently wealthy or adequately paid for my journalism, the burn out would not occur.

Here, I will approach journalism as an art form. The artist creates because that is the nature of being an artist. I am a multimedia journalist and I am going to cover my chosen topics, my way, figuring that the Internet has matured enough over the decade to enable me to find the natural audience for my work, some of whom will actually enjoy parting with some of their money to see it continue.

What you’ll get here is my particular dedication to global issues and holistic solutions. NO ID Politics! While I am not saying that discrimination, in all its Hydra-headed ugliness, has ceased to exist, I am saying that it is a symptom of something far worse. What function do racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. serve in the world? Who benefits from them? These questions interest me more than the story of who found a noose on their office door, or who’s family was broken up by an immigration raid. There are many other journalists who cover those stories well. If I do speak of a particular ID group, it will be related to a larger context. e.g. the principles of Islamic finance have enabled Islamic banks to weather the current banking crisis much better than Western banks. People interested in developing a new kind of economics that will avoid the woes of the current system should at least study Islamic finance to see what it offers. But they should study it not because it is Islamic (the ID-politics perspective), but because it works to foster stable economics.

Some posts will include audio or video. I do not confine myself to a particular “beat.” I consider myself more of a public affairs producer than a news reporter, so I will produce more commentary and analysis here than straight news. But I will also include straight news stories either as “fair use” or with permission of my colleagues, to serve an educational purpose or to serve as take off for discussion. You’re also invited to visit my video channel freedomnews for more news content.

I look forward to your input.

Navigation Tips

Posted by kelliasworld on October 25, 2008

I had hoped to write separate pages for separate subjects. But it is not possible to post to a page. So we will have to rely on “categories” to sort things out. Check the categories drop-down box in the sidebar for the subjects you are interested in. Right now I am emphasizing the category Elections ’08 and topic within that category of “Safe Voting.” More categories and topics, the latter of which can be found in the tags, will be added later.

Your Role in Making this a GREAT Blog!

Posted by kelliasworld on October 25, 2008

Yes, this means you! Communication is a two-way street.

1) Ignore labels. I call myself a progressive and am very proudly liberal, but the way things are these days, I have points of agreement with traditional conservatives and libertarians and who knows who else. I know that labels are divisive and limiting and the editorial point of view (POV) of this blog is that problems are more likely to be solved when we look at the big picture and find our commonalities.

2) Comment, even if you disagree. If you do disagree, share your ideas so that we can have discussion and debate. Comments that just call me names and merely show outrage only serve to show that the author is a nut.

3) Make recommendations of people I should interview, books I should review and sites I should link to, etc. Tell me what topics you are interested in.

4) Put me on your list of places to send stuff if you are a print journalist, photojournalist, videographer, or radio producer who agrees with my NO-ID Politics POV, and you want more exposure. I might choose not to publish–If I don’t I’ll tell you why–and I can’t pay right now, though a goal of this blog is to make it a going concern so that someday I can pay. But if exposure is what you want most, it can’t hurt to add this blog. You always keep the copyrights to your own work that is published here.

5) Tell your friends I’m here. The more the merrier.

6) Send money, if you can spare it. As the blog develops, there will be things you can buy, particularly, my poetry book, “Near the Ragged Edge of Earth”, and copies of full length interviews. But even before all that is arranged, think of how you spend your media budget and how this blog can be added to or replace some other media you buy. If you are low income, don’t sweat it. But I would appreciate it if folks with something to spare will share. To buy the poetry book, click on it’s link in the sidebar; it will take you to cafepress.com, where you can complete the transaction. To make a donation, contact me at ByrnesBlogger1@gmail.com I will announce how to get recorded interviews as they become available.
